East China’s Jiangsu province has made unremitting efforts to promote the “waste free city" campaign as an important measure to promote the synergistic effect of pollution reduction and carbon reduction, according to a press conference held by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment on Monday.

The "waste free city" is an urban development model guided by new development concepts, which promotes the formation of green production and lifestyle, continuously promotes the reduction and resource utilization of solid waste at the source so as to minimize the impact of solid waste on the environment.

In January 2022, Jiangsu took the lead in the country in launching the "waste free city" campaign with 9 prefecture-level cities included in the national list of "waste free cities" during the 14th Five-Year-Plan period.

As of the end of 2022, Jiangsu has built 97 centralized disposal facilities for hazardous waste, with a total processing capacity of 2.694 million tons per year, which has resulted in a 3.8% decrease in energy consumption per unit of added value for industrial units above designated size in the province, with the number of green factories, green parks and other facilities ranking among the top in the country.

In terms of green agricultural development, 95% of the province’s crop straw and livestock manure are comprehensively utilized.

By the end of 2022, about 19 thousand communities across the province have carried out domestic garbage sorting, with a coverage rate of about 80%. Jiangsu has built 24 construction waste with an annual recycling capacity of more than 1 million tons and a total capacity of 33 million tons.

In the next step, Jiangsu will refine and form a set of "waste free cells" standard system with Jiangsu characteristics so as to continuously improve the level of resource utilization and comprehensive utilization.

“We want to formulate standards and norms for different types of "waste free cells" in the whole province, which can guide the construction requirements or basis of the 13 prefecture-level cities and ensure that the province’s construction of "waste free cities" will take the lead in the country”, Huang Wenping, Deputy Director of Solid Waste Supervision and Management Center, Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment, said.
