The cities of Nantong in east China’s Jiangsu province has spared no efforts to step up high quality development and strive to create an important growth engine for the province’s high-quality development. JSBC has the story.

Nantong is striving to become an important growth pole for the province’s high-quality development so as to promote high-quality economic development with high-level ecological environment protection. In the meantime, the city is accelerating the iterative upgrading of traditional advantageous industries, laying out and cultivating emerging industries, and striving to create high-quality development on the new journey.
In early summer, along the Yangtze River in the Wushan area of Nantong, the scene of Yangtze River finless porpoises swimming in groups has attracted a continuous stream of tourists and citizens.
“I was informed that there were finless porpoises here, and I really saw them, which is really a very good impression”,a tourist from Sichuan, said.
“In the past, although we were close to the Yangtze River, we couldn"t see it. Now we have easy access to the Yangtze River and green spaces”, atourist Citizen of Nantong, said.
In the past, the Nantong section of the Yangtze River was occupied by chemical plants. Nowadays, the finless porpoise swimming in the water has become a tourist attraction.
The changes have stemmed from the city’s shutdown of and relocation of 203 polluting enterprises along the river, the restoration of 12 kilometers of coastline, and the addition of approximately 6 square kilometers of forest area.
Nantong has strictly adhered to the environmental access threshold by implementing 2155 atmospheric control projects, promoting 412 key water pollution prevention and control projects, and completing the integration of 7373 enterprises into the hazardous waste full life cycle supervision system.
Under high-level environmental protection, Nantong has continued to improve the quality of its ecological environment. In 2022, Nantong recorded a PM2.5 concentration of 25.9 micrograms per cubic meter with all the river sections under the provincial assessment achieved excellent III water quality%, ranking first in both indicators in the province.
“This is COSCO Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. in Qidong, and I am currently standing in the assembly area of the marine engineering ship. With the cooperation of a huge tower crane, the workers on board are assembling some advanced modules”,Liu Kang, JSBC staff reporter, said.
By seizing new opportunities, Nantong is revitalizing traditional industries. The world"s largest tonnage new offshore floating production, storage, and unloading vessel is under construction, and the country"s largest 4000 ton full swing crane vessel is about to be delivered.
“Our annual output value started at 35 billion yuan, reached 2.5 billion yuan last year, and is expected to exceed 30 billion yuan this year. We need to step upour efforts in technological innovation and build our industry into a world-renowned and first-class marine heavy equipment industry base in China”,Huang Haojie, Secretary of the Party Committee of Qidong Marine Industrial Park, said.
Riding the waves of digital transformation, Nantong"s traditional industrial textiles are also upgrading towards high-end textiles. With the help of scientific and technological innovation, Nantong has made accelerated breakthroughs in the traditional electronic information industry, including big data, cloud computing, and integrated circuit industries.
At present, Nantong has recorded an annual output value of more than 100 billion yuan in shipbuilding, high-end textile, new generation information technology, new materials, high-end equipment, and new energy. Last year, Nantong recorded a gross regional product of 1.14 trillion yuan, up 2.1% year on year.
