East China"s Jiangsu province will step up flood control in the Taihu Lake in the summer time by studying General Secretary Xi Jinping"s important speeches and mapping out key tasks for this year"s flood control, according to a video conference on Taihu Lake flood control held on Wednesday. Xu Kunlin, Governor and Commander in Chief of the Taihu Lake Flood Control Headquarters, and Liu Weiping, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Water Resources, attended the meeting and delivered speeches.

Xu Kunlin pointed out that in the past year, all parts of the Taihu Lake basin have won a comprehensive victory in flood control by working together to make scientific scheduling and overcome difficulties so as to have successfully prevented the impact of heavy rainfall, effectively responded to the floods of Qiantang River and Minjiang River tributaries that exceeded historical records, and actively resolved the rare salt tide intrusion in the Yangtze River estuary.

Xu Kunlin asked all localities to plan systematically and implement precise policies, strengthen flood control, enhance the comprehensive management of the Taihu Lake, and lay a solid foundation for high-quality economic and social development.

Noting that the Taihu Lake basin has entered the flood season, the governor requested all parts of the province to focus on the weak links, check all kinds of hidden dangers, key parts and important engineering facilities, implement risk elimination measures, pay close attention to risk reinforcement, ensure the safety of flood control of important rivers and lakes, implement urban flood control and water-logging drainage measures, strengthen the prevention of typhoon and mountain torrents, strengthen the safety management of reservoirs and dams and ensure the safety of people"s lives and property.

He demanded that all regions strengthen their emergency response capabilities, improve monitoring and warning of water and drought disasters, give full play to the role of various water conservancy projects in regulating and storing water, strengthen the construction of professional teams for flood prevention and rescue, strengthen technical support for disaster relief, effectively enhance flood control and disaster reduction capabilities, optimize the layout of water conservancy projects, accelerate the construction of major projects, and effectively improve comprehensive defense capabilities.

He asked the whole province to make every effort to ensure the water supply and water ecological security of the Taihu Lake, effectively promote a new round of comprehensive cleanup of the Taihu Lake, promote the ecological improvement of the Taihu Lake, strengthen responsibility implementation, command and dispatch, solidarity and cooperation, and strive to win the overall success of flood control with practical measures and excellent style.
