The expansion project of Xinyi-Jiangdu section of G2 Beijing–Shanghai Expressway was opened to traffic on Tuesday. Let’s take a close look.
The Xinyi-Jiangdu section is an important section of the national highway from Beijing to Shanghai, and also a major transportation artery running through the north and south of Jiangsu.
Starting from the provincial boundary between Shandong and Jiangsu in the north and connects with the Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge in the south, the expansion project run through 10 counties or districts in four prefectural cities of Xuzhou, Suqian, Huai"an and Yangzhou.
The approximately 259.5-kilometer-long road has been built into a two-way eight-lane expressway, with a designed speed of 120 kilometers per hour, making it the longest highway renovation and expansion project in the history of Jiangsu, with a total investment of approximately 31.26 billion yuan.
After more than three years of construction, the eight-lane renovation and expansion project has been completed, further enhancing the traffic capacity of the road network from northern and central Jiangsu to Shanghai and Zhejiang, which will effectively divert vehicles and alleviate local road congestion with the average daily traffic volume expected to increase from 34000 vehicles before the expansion to 45000 vehicles.
The expanded expressway is of great significance for implementing the development strategy of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, promoting the integration process of the Yangtze River Delta, and improving the traffic capacity and service level of the national highway corridor.
