The 2023 International Severe Respiratory Disease Summit opened in Nanjing on Monday, and the China Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Research Alliance was officially established at the conference.
Acute respiratory distress syndrome or ARDS is a clinical syndrome characterized by persistent hypoxemia that occurs after severe infections, trauma, shock, and other pulmonary and extrapulmonary diseases.
ARDS has been a research hotspot in the field of Intensive care medicine due to its acute onset, rapid progress, difficult treatment and high fatality rate.
“One characteristic of acute respiratory distress syndrome is its extremely acute onset. As long as you feel more difficult breathing than you feel every day, which affects your work, study and life, you should not hesitate to go to the hospital as soon as possible, and let the doctor make a diagnosis early, so that the overall prognosis will be much better”, Sang Ling, Professor/Chief physician, Department of Intensive Care Medicine, First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, said.
The China Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Research Alliance is jointly led by the Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University and the First Hospital affiliated to Guangzhou Medical University. A total of 50 hospitals have become the founding members of the Alliance.
The alliance will continuously improve the level of disease diagnosis and treatment through various methods such as conducting clinical research, opening clinical databases, and providing guidance from top experts.
“We want to convert our clinical experience into research evidence, guide the transformation of clinical treatment, and ultimately enable patients to receive more standardized and effective treatment, thereby benefiting the patients”, Liu Ling, Deputy Director/Chief physician of Intensive Care Medicine Department, Zhongda Hospital, Southeast University, said.
