East China"s Jiangsu province has made headway in river pollution control by cleaning up polluted rivers and lakes across the province, according to a meeting of the general rive chief held on Monday by the provincial government. Xin Changxing, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial General River Chief, presided over the meeting and delivered a speech. Deng Xiuming, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Deputy Provincial General River Chief, attended the meeting.

Noting that water is an extremely important aspect of ecological factors, Xin Changxing said for a province like Jiangsu, which has large rivers, lakes, and oceans, controlling and protecting water is a political responsibility that we must fulfill and also an unwavering mission.

We need to deeply understand the importance of water control and protection on the new journey, provide reliable water resources guarantee for high-quality development, and give greater impetus for the modernization construction of new Jiangsu.

Xin Changxing demanded efforts to give full play to the effectiveness of water conservancy infrastructure, build a strong comprehensive water conservancy guarantee system, accelerate the connectivity of river and lake water systems, comprehensively improve water resource regulation and storage capabilities, and continuously consolidate the hardware foundation for river and lake protection and governance.

The provincial party chief required all regions to strengthen the tracing and rectification of sewage outlets, the collection and treatment of urban and rural domestic sewage, the containment of agricultural non-point source pollution, the control of the ship and port pollution, the construction of green waterways, and wetland protection, coordinate water resource protection, water environment management, and water ecological restoration so that every river and every lake is protected.

Xin Changxing requested the water conservancy department to improve the management of key rivers and lakes, deepen the implementation of ecological restoration along the Yangtze River shoreline, accelerate the construction of a green development pilot zone in the Yangtze River Basin, control the accumulation of phosphorus and nitrogen in Taihu Lake, promote the cultural inheritance of the Grand Canal and the improvement of the ecological environment, and comprehensively manage the shrinking water area of Hongze Lake and the ecological degradation of some coastal rivers and lakes.

Xin Changxing emphasized that with the arrival of the flood season, Jiangsu will face a disaster-prone period and critical flood prevention, making it necessary to adhere to bottom-line thinking, advance planning, precise scheduling, scientific response, early detection of problems and swift resolution of problems so as to ensure the safety of people"s lives and property.
