East China"s Jiangsu Province held a meeting on the promotion and implementation of the Regulation of the People"s Republic of China on Consular Protection and Assistance Friday in Nanjing. The Regulation was unveiled in July and will come into effect on Sept. 1, 2023.

At the meeting, the Foreign Affairs Office of Jiangsu Provincial People"s Government introduced the basic content of the Regulation and released a series of promotional videos on consular protection jointly produced with Jiangsu International Communication Center. In view of the four main "go global" groups in Jiangsu province, namely, overseas students, outbound tourists, overseas workers, and enterprises going global, relevant officials introduced the assistance and cooperation work of the Provincial Department of Education, Department of Culture and Tourism, and Department of Commerce respectively.

Jiangsu is an open province with a large number of citizens, businesses, and institutions abroad. With the changes in the international security environment, about 100 overseas emergencies involving Jiangsu citizens occur every year. Over the past 11 years, Jiangsu has handled more than 1,000 cases of consular protection and assistance involving nearly 10,000 of citizens, including evacuation operations, major accident disposing, humanitarian assistance, foreign labor, and economic dispute coordination.

The Foreign Affairs Office of Jiangsu Provincial People"s Government will, together with relevant departments and localities, fulfill its responsibilities in accordance with the Regulation, further strengthen security warning, risk assessment, accident prevention, emergency response, and other aspects of the work, and promote the coordination between the central government, local governments, embassies and consulates abroad, enterprises, and citizens.
